Keith loves lighthouses so he requested we add Cape Hatteras to our trip traveling up the East Coast. Done!
When we bought the original Annie, my dad had shared with us his 330 rule - you either drive 330 miles or stop at 3:30pm. This way you get to enjoy the campground instead of getting in late. So, when we upgraded to Annie Too I had to reconfigure our travel plans as we are pulling more weight. This now means we are driving slower than before. Due to this, I had to create a midway stop from Savannah, GA to Cape Hatteras, NC.
I found a military campground, Fort Fisher, for us to stay at that looked like it would work perfectly. They offer a military discount, which is great! It cost us around $150 but being that we were right across from the beach made that nightly fee worth it. I thought it was located more in the Wilmington/Cape Fear area but it's actually in a town called Kure Beach, NC. It was once an Air Force Base that is now a National Guard base/recreation area. They offer 26 RV spaces and many little cottages right across from the beach.
Military campgrounds seemed like a great idea for this trip as they are super affordable for military personal and retired veterans. They typically charge $20/$25 a night, not bad at all! Sadly, this was the only one that worked out for us. Plus, once we joined Thousand Trails we are using mainly their campgrounds. We do have a few other campgrounds thrown in that are close to destinations we wanted to be near.
So anyway, this town... If you are ever in the area, come check it out. They have many kitschy beach restaurants and stores, the beach is close to everyone as it's not a big place. I'm not sure when their high season begins but right now is great - not a ton of people, everything appears to be open, plus the beach is clean and clear.
We did watch the movie Cape Fear while here but we never did go to Cape Fear. No biggie, the breeze here makes up for it!
Today we are off to Cape Hatteras for a few nights and we are looking forward to it!
